DUTY OF TONNAGE
A fee that encompasses all taxes andcustoms duties, regardless of their name or form, imposed upon a vessel as an instrument of commerce for entering, remaining in, or exiting from a port.
Conceptually, a duty of tonnage is assessed for the privilege of transacting business in a port.
