WORLD STANDARD ENGLISH
WORLD STANDARD ENGLISH. Short form WSE. English in a standard form used as a (or the) world language: ‘While Congress and Parliament originate in their respective countries, it is no longer very useful to call one AmE and the other BrE, from a linguistic point of view. They are now part of World Standard English (WSE)’ ( David Crystal, The Cambridge Encyclopedia of the English Language, 1995); ‘Even if the new Englishes did become increasingly different, as years went by, the consequences for world English would not necessarily be fatal … A new form of English—let us think of it as “World Standard Spoken English” (WSSE)—would almost certainly arise. Indeed, the foundation for such a development is already being laid around us’ (David Crystal, English as a Global Language, 1997). Compare INTERNATIONAL STANDARD ENGLISH.
