Solano, Francisco (1549–1610)

Francisco Solano (b. March 1549; d. 14 July 1610), Franciscan missionary. Born in Montilla, Spain, Solano studied at the Jesuit college in that country, took minor orders, and was professed as a Franciscan in 1570. For twenty years he worked in Spain as a preacher and a novice master. In 1589 he arrived in America, where he worked principally with the Calchaquí Indians of central Argentina. Solano was the superior of all Franciscan houses and missions in the area and established houses and missions throughout Tucumán. He was noted for his compassion, patience, and love of the Indians. Solano died in Lima and was buried in the Franciscan church there. He was beatified in 1675 and canonized in 1726.
