Pacheco, Maria Cristina (1941–)

Cristina Pacheco is one of the outstanding literary journalists of contemporary Mexico. Born on September 13, 1941, in San Felipe Torresmocha, Guanajuato, she studied Hispanic literature at Universidad Nacional de Mexico and began her journalistic work in 1960. In Pacheco's work, as in that of Carlos Monsiváis and Elena Poniatowska, literary writing and journalism are always interconnected. Pacheco has hosted the television program Aquí nos tocó vivir since 1980. She has twice won the Premio Nacional de Periodismo (1975, 1985) and has also been awarded the Premio de la Asociación Nacional de Periodistas (1986). Her works include Para vivir aquí (1982); Orozco, iconografía personal (1983); Sopita de fideo (1984); Testimonios y conversaciones (1984); Zona de desastre, Cuarto de azotea, and La voz de la tierra (1986); La última noche del tigre (1987); Luz de México (1988); and El corazón de la noche (1990). Fernando Benítez wrote in the newspaper La Jornada that "Cristina Pacheco, without pursuing it, is the best chronicler of the city; she knows more about the city than the members of the city council" (March 25, 1997).
