Negrete, Jorge (1911–1953)

Jorge Negrete (b. 30 November 1911; d. 5 December 1953), Mexican actor and singer. Born in Guanajuato, Negrete began his studies in a military academy, but dropped out to pursue a music career. Throughout the 1930s he had a series of successful singing engagements in Mexico and the United States. In 1937 Negrete debuted in the film La madrina del diablo. His good looks, deep masculine voice, and self-assurance quickly propelled him to stardom. Negrete, along with Pedro Infante, dominated the ranchera films. Known as the "immortal charro mexicano," he starred in over forty films. Among his classic features are El peñón de las ánimas; El cementerio de las ánimas; La Valentina; ¡Ay, Jalisco, no te rajes!; Historia de un gran amor; El rapto; and Dos tipos de cuidado. He was also a founder and president of the cinema workers' union.
