Negrea, Marxţian

Negrea, Marxţian, Romanian composer and teacher; b. Vorumloc, Feb. 10, 1893; d. Bucharest, July 13, 1973. He studied with Timotei Popò vici (theory and harmony) at the Andréien Seminary in Sibiu (1910–14) and with Mandyczewski (harmony, counterpoint, and music history) and Franz Schmidt (composition) at the Vienna Academy of Music (1918–21). He was a prof, of harmony at the Cluj Cons. (1921-1) and the Bucharest Cons. (1941–63). In his music, Negrea sought a balance between post-Romantic and Impressionist elements, to which he brought an infusion of folk melos.
