Herrerabarría, Adriano (1928–)

Adriano Herrerabarría (b. 28 Dec. 1928), Panamanian painter. After completing a master of fine arts at the San Carlos Academy in Mexico City (1955), Herrerabarría returned to Panama, where he was an art professor and later director of the Escuela Nacional de Artes Plásticas.

Herrerabarría's early work reflected the influence of social realism and Mexican muralism. In his mature style, which can be described as a surrealism of organic forms, he combined sociopolitical and racial issues with a visionary mysticism, as in Posesión (1981). Unorthodox and rebellious, he published his radical views in numerous articles. In addition to his easel paintings, he created numerous murals.
