Guerra, Ramón (1841–1922)

Ramón Guerra (b. 1841; d. 1922), Venezuelan caudillo. Guerra began his political and military career during the Federal War (1859–1863), becoming a key figure in the Venezuelan political alliances of the era. He was an opponent of Juan Crisóstomo Falcón; both an enemy and temporary ally of Antonio Guzmán Blanco; a successful military commander (1892) and later member of the Consejo Militar (1893) in the regime of General Joaquín Crespo; and a crucial figure behind the victory of Cipriano Castro, whom he later opposed in La Libertadora Revolution of 1901–1903. He supported the accession to power of Juan Vicente Gómez and was part of the Council of Government. When that body dissolved in 1914, Guerra retired permanently from public life.
