COMPARATIVE DEGREE

views updated

COMPARATIVE DEGREE, also degree of comparison. The middle term in the three degrees of an ADJECTIVE or ADVERB. With some exceptions (better, worse, farther/further), the comparative is formed by adding -er to shorter words (kinder, faster) and more to longer words (more beautiful, more nervously). Many words that inflect can also be modified by more: commoner/more common. See SUPERLATIVE (DEGREE).
