boring (noun) A trace fossil that penetrates the hard surface of an organism or rock. The word may be used to describe the drill holes made by natacid gastropods (Gastropoda) into the shells of prey, or the short, tube-like extensions to larger borings made by the siphons of certain bivalves (Bivalvia), e.g. Pholas.
