Hingston Down, battle of, 838. For decades the Britons of Cornwall (Dumnonia) had been resisting the growing pressure of Wessex. In 838 they joined with a Viking force, possibly from Ireland, but were defeated at Hingston Down, between Callington and the Tamar, by Egbert. Cornwall was then incorporated into the Wessex empire.
