Hines, Jerome (Albert Link) [ Jerome Heinz] (b Los Angeles, 1921; d NY, 2003). Amer. bass and composer. Début S. Francisco 1941 (Monterone in Rigoletto). Won Caruso Award and NY Met début 1946. Eur. début (Edinburgh Fest.) 1953; Bayreuth 1958. Sang Boris in Russian at Bolshoy, 1962, and later in Leningrad, and in orig. vers. at Met 1975. Wrote opera I am the Way, on life of Christ, Philadelphia 1969. Autobiography This is my Story, This is my Song (NJ 1968) and wrote Great Singers on Great Singing (London 1982).
