Northcliffe, Alfred Charles William Harmsworth, Viscount (1865–1922) British newspaper publisher, b. Ireland. In 1896 he launched the Daily Mail, whose concise, readable style of news presentation proved very successful. In 1905 he founded the Daily Mirror, the first picture paper, and in 1908 gained control of The Times.
