North, Frederick, Lord (1732–92) British statesman, prime minister (1770–82). He entered Parliament in 1754. North was lord of the treasury (1759–65) and chancellor (1767–70) before becoming prime minister under King George III. His repressive measures against the North American colonies, particularly the Intolerable Acts, are seen as a precipitating factor for the American Revolution. In 1782, he formed a coalition with Charles James Fox, but was forced to resign in 1783.
