Mackerras, Sir (Alan) Charles (1925– ) Australian conductor, b. USA. He was musical director of English National Opera (1970–87) and Welsh National Opera (1987–92). Mackerras' most distinctive contribution has been as an interpreter of Czech music, notably Leoš Janáček.
