epistles Collection of 20 letters forming most of the middle section of the New Testament. More than half of them are attributed to the apostle Saint Paul – the so-called Pauline Epistles – while the rest are by various writers: two by Peter, three by John, one by James and one by Jude. The author of the Epistle to the Hebrews is unknown. Among the Pauline Epistles, the Epistle to the Romans contains the single most complete formulation of Paul's teachings.
