UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN–SUPERIOR

Distance Learning Center
Superior, Wisconsin

The Distance Learning Center (formerly known as the Extended Degree Program) at the University of Wisconsin–Superior (UW–Superior) was established in 1978. UW–Superior is part of the highly acclaimed University of Wisconsin System.

The Distance Learning Program is a nationwide program with one tuition for all students. It is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools and serves adults who do not have access to a four-year institution because of where they live or because of career and/or family responsibilities.

UW–Superior recognizes that adults are dedicated to achieving educational goals but must also address other priorities. By enrolling in UW–Superior's Distance Learning Program, students can obtain a degree without having to come to the campus. The individually designed major is designed by the student to fit his or her career goals and educational needs. Elementary education is an option for the student who wants to teach in Wisconsin. Communications is the third major offered by the Distance Learning Center.

Distance Learning Program

The Distance Learning Program is a semester-based program. The three enrollment periods include fall, spring, and summer. Each class is taught by a UW–Superior faculty member to ensure that students are receiving the best instruction possible, with an up-to-date curriculum. At any given time, more than 200 students are enrolled in the program. Advisers work closely with students as they complete their degrees.

Delivery Media

Courses are delivered in both online and print-based formats. Access to the Desire 2 Learn software is provided through the UW–Superior network system. Students are encouraged to utilize e-mail and message boards while enrolled in the online courses. Print-based course materials can be mailed or faxed to the Distance Learning Office.

Programs of Study

The Distance Learning Program offers three bachelor's degree options: communications, elementary education, and the individually designed major.

The communications degree is the newest major offered. Students work with faculty members who specialize in improving communications. It not only allows students to dig deeper into the communications discipline but also gives students a wide range of communication venues to explore—interpersonal, conflict, persuasion, organizational, and intercultural communication.

The individualized major allows students to plan a major using both past and new learning experiences. It is designed by students to meet their educational and career goals. Examples of individualized majors include human services, child development, and health management.

The elementary education degree at a distance has been in existence for more than twenty-five years. It provides preparation for Wisconsin licensure for birth through ages 11–12 or ages 6 through 12–13. UW–Superior's Teacher Education Department has an excellent reputation for quality and innovation.

Credit Options

Credit for prior learning is made possible through credit by exam, credit for military service, and credit for non-university programs. Students also have the option to petition for technical college credit and to seek credit through portfolio development.

Admission

Students seeking admission to the Distance Learning Program can apply online at the University's Web site (http://www.uwsuper.edu). They can also request admission information via e-mail.

Tuition and Fees

All distance learning students pay the same tuition regardless of residency. An additional course fee is charged for each course.
