Description:

State-supported, comprehensive, coed. Part of Utah System of Higher Education. Awards associate, bachelor's, and master's degrees. Founded 1897. Setting: 113-acre small town campus. Endowment: $5.1 million. Educational spending 2003-04: $2976 per student. Total enrollment: 6,672. Faculty: 290 (218 full-time, 72 part-time). Student-undergrad faculty ratio is 21:1. 1,733 applied, 91% were admitted. 26% from top 10% of their high school class, 50% from top quarter, 80% from top half. Full-time: 4,480 students, 54% women, 46% men. Part-time: 1,901 students, 64% women, 36% men. Students come from 40 states and territories, 14 other countries, 12% from out-of-state, 1% Native American, 2% Hispanic, 1% black, 2% Asian American or Pacific Islander, 1% international, 22% 25 or older, 13% live on campus, 8% transferred in. Collegiate Environment:

Orientation program. Drama-theater group, choral group, marching band, student-run newspaper, radio station. Social organizations: 45 open to all; national fraternities, national sororities, local sororities; 2% of eligible men and 3% of eligible women are members. Most popular organizations: Outdoor Club, Intertribal Club, Latter Day Saints Student Association, Ski Club, Residence Halls Association. Major annual events: Homecoming Parade, Thunderbird Awards, Miss SUU Pageant. Student services: health clinic, personal-psychological counseling, women's center. Campus security: 24-hour emergency response devices, student patrols, late night transport-escort service, controlled dormitory access. Options: coed, men-only, women-only housing available. Southern Utah University Library with 180,424 books, 629,897 microform titles, 6,165 serials, 13,352 audiovisual materials, an OPAC, and a Web page. Operations spending 2003-04: $1.1 million. 300 computers available on campus for general student use. A campuswide network can be accessed from student residence rooms and from off campus. Staffed computer lab on campus.

Community Environment:

Cedar City is located within a few hours of the Grand Canyon, Lake Powell, Cedar Breaks National Monument, Bryce Canyon, Zion National Park and other scenic wonders. It is 2 1/2 hours from Las Vegas. Cedar City is accessible by airlines, railroad, bus lines, and major highways. The community has churches representing most denominations, a hospital, public library, and a museum. Student housing is available in the community. Various civic, fraternal, and veteran's organizations are active in the area. Local recreation includes indoor and outdoor theatres, hunting, fishing, skiing, golf, and boating. There is a shopping center in the area.
