urban renewal
urban renewal. Fashionable American term of the 1950s, which really meant large-scale destructive redevelopment of urban areas, often in association with central or municipal government. It was adopted in the United Kingdom to mean the replanning of towns or urban centres to modernize them and provide access for traffic. More recently it has tended to imply a renewal of urban fabric damaged through neglect or inappropriate intervention.
