sprue, tropical Name given (by Dutch in Java) to a tropical disease characterized by fatty diarrhoea and sore mouth, with signs of undernutrition due to poor absorption of nutrients. Both an unidentified infectious agent and folic acid deficiency have been suggested as causes.
