Howard, John Galen
Howard, John Galen (1864–1931). American architect, educated at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris (1891–3), who worked with H. H. Richardson and McKim, Mead, & White. He moved to CA in 1901, where he designed the Hearst Mining Building (1901–7), the Greek Theater (1920–3), California Hall (1903–5), the Architecture Building (1906–12), the Doe Library (1907–17), the Sather Gate (1908–10), Boalt Hall (1908–11), the Sather Tower (1911–14), Hilgard Hall (1916–17), Stephens Hall (1921–3), and the Women's Faculty Club (1923), all for the University of California. He also designed several houses in the Bay Area of San Francisco. His commercial and public buildings exhibited an assured approach to Classicism, clearly derived from his studies in France.
