Félibien des Avaux, André
Félibien des Avaux, André (1619–95). French architect and writer. His Des Principes de l'architecture … avec un dictionnaire des termes propres … (Principles of Architecture … with a Dictionary of Correct Terms—1676) was one of the most important reference works of its time. His son, Jean-François Félibien des Avaux (c.1656–1733), published a somewhat unreliable work on the lives and works of celebrated architects in 1699 which, nevertheless, contained a synoptic discussion of Gothic and Islamic architecture, one of the very first printed attempts to do so.
