biopterin The coenzyme for a number of enzymes, including phenylalanine, tyrosine, and tryptophan hydroxylases. Not a dietary requirement, since it can readily be synthesized in the body. Rare patients with a variant form of phenylketonuria cannot synthesize biopterin, and have to receive supplements.
