rock glacier A tongue-like mass of large, angular blocks, finer debris, and ice, found especially in middle latitude Alpine regions (there are about 1000 active examples in the Swiss Alps). It may have a core of ice, in which case it may have originated as a debris-covered glacier, or it may be icecemented, when it may be a permafrost phenomenon.
