IMPACT OF 9/11
The terrorist attacks on the United States on September 11, 2001, have affected all aspects of the airline industry, including airline reservation systems. The U.S. Department of Transportation is considering security measures that involve red-flagging a suspected terrorist's name in an airline reservation system. Such queries and retrievals from long- established mainframe-based systems would represent a very costly system overhaul. In addition to resolving technical and cost issues, various local, state, federal, and international government agencies must resolve privacy and data ownership issues associated with information sharing.
