WHEDBEE, J. William 1938-2004

OBITUARY NOTICE—

See index for CA sketch: Born September 24, 1938, in Santa Ana, CA; died January 22, 2004, in Claremont, CA. Educator and author. Whedbee was a respected professor of biblical literature and history at Pomona College. Completing his undergraduate degree at Westcott College in 1960, he went on to earn a B.D. at Fuller Theological Seminary in 1963, and his M.A. and Ph.D. from Yale in 1965 and 1968 respectively. He joined the Pomona faculty in 1966 and was named Nancy Lyon Associate Professor of Biblical History in 1976. Widely admired for his love of teaching, Whedbee was five times awarded the Wig Distinguished Professorship Award for Excellence in Teaching from Pomona. Interested in hermeneutics, near-Eastern culture, the history of biblical interpretation, and literary criticism, he was the author of Isaiah and Wisdom (1971) and The Bible and the Comic Vision (1998).
