SIDELIGHTS:

William L. Waugh, Jr., told CA: "I enjoy getting involved in things that I find important. I serve on the City of Decatur Planning Commission because I am concerned about the quality of life in my community. I work with emergency managers, including serving on the Emergency Management Accreditation Program Commission that sets standards for and accredits state and local emergency management programs, because I believe in the profession and its critical role in American society. There should be no boundaries between academia and the rest of the world.

"Writing is cathartic. It is a solitary process, and finding uninterrupted time is difficult. The real challenge is to understand the reader as well as the subject matter. I try to capture ideas as they are found, string them together late at night, and edit between innings at baseball games and on the train ride to and from the office."
