SIDELIGHTS:

James L. Terry's interest in New York baseball history inspired his book Long before the Dodgers: Baseball in Brooklyn, 1855-1884. From baseball's roots in gentlemen's sporting clubs during the mid-nineteenth century, the book traces the history of the sport in Brooklyn and discusses the Dodgers' formation as a team, their decision to join the fledgling National League in 1876, and their rise to national prominence after 1884. Reviewing the book for Choice, P. L. de Rosa praised Long before the Dodgers as an extended history that "illuminates both urban and baseball history in the sport's formative period," while Library Journal contributor Paul Kaplan dubbed Terry's work "well-researched."
