SIDELIGHTS: Freddy Silva, a crop-circle researcher, lecturer, and photographer, created and maintains the Crop Circlular online, which provides a history of crop circles and presents ideas regarding the phenomena. Crop circles have appeared in various locations, often in wheat fields, and are typically complex geometric shapes or religious symbols. Silva's book, Secrets in the Fields: The Science and Mysticism of Crop Circles, is the culmination of eleven years of research on the subject. In this volume, which contains more than 400 photographs, pictograms, and diagrams, Silva considers why crop circles interact with the Earth's magnetic grid, whether they are created by sound and light, human interaction with them, and their possible relationship to unidentified flying objects. He presents his theories regarding the authenticity of crop circles, including who or what creates them and why they appear. Library Journal contributor Leroy Hommerding wrote that Silva "conveys his keen passion for earth mysticism in this probing examination."
