See index for CA sketch: Born April 8, 1936, in Kansas City, MO (one source says Paola, KS); died of cancer March 4, 2004, in Falls Church, VA. Museum curator, educator, and author. Russell was a former curator at the National Gallery of Art. After earning a B.A. in 1958 from Vassar College, she worked as a research assistant for the Smithsonian Institution from 1960 to 1961, and in 1964 was hired by the National Gallery of Art as a museum curator. Completing her Ph.D. in art history at Johns Hopkins University in 1970, she remained at the Washington, D.C., museum throughout her career, becoming curator and head of Old Master prints from 1990 until her 1998 retirement. Russell was also a lecturer at American University intermittently during the late 1960s and 1970s, and was a member of the Institute for Advanced Study from 1980 to 1981. Involved in several organizations, she was a member of the Renaissance Society of America, the Print Council of America, and the College Art Association of America. Russell published several exhibition catalogs during her career, such as Jacque Callot: Prints and Related Drawings (1975) and Claude Lorraine, 1600-1682 (1982). For her service to the art community, in 1984 she was presented with the Award of Merit from the American Association of Museums and the Alfred H. Barr Jr. Award from the College Art Association of America.
