SIDELIGHTS:

John Punter is a scholar of urban planning and development who has influenced modern design, planning, and management. His books, including Design Guidelines in American Cities: A Review of Design Policies and Guidance in Five West Coast Cities and The Vancouver Achievement 1970-2000: Discretionary Zoning, Planning, and Urban Design, examine urban planning practices in various cities in an attempt to illustrate examples of the most effective way to design modern cities.

In Design Guidelines in American Cities, Punter looks at the urban planning process of Seattle, Washington; Portland, Oregon; San Francisco, California; Irvine, California; and San Diego, California. Every chapter reviews a particular city's development and design, including "substantial extracts" of original planning documents, Elizabeth MacDonald noted in Journal of the American Planning Association. "This gives a clear and direct sense of the issues each city is addressing and the design policy response," MacDonald continued.

The Vancouver Achievement 1970-2000 is a case study of the urban planning of the Canadian city of Vancouver, in British Columbia. Punter traces the development of the city and attempts to explain why Vancouver is often referred to as an example of success in urban design.
