OBITUARY NOTICE—

See index for CA sketch: Born April 22, 1927, in Birmingham, England; died February 12, 2008. Lawyer, educator, and author. Pennington taught commercial law at the University of Birmingham from 1962 to 1994. He was also a consultant on legal issues in Europe, Trinidad and Tobago, and the Seychelles, and a legal advisor to the United Nations and the Commission of the European Communities. What set him apart as a British scholar was his expertise in the area of European law and its impact on British company and corporate law as England moved ever closer to the European community in the 1970s. What distinguished him in the classroom was reportedly the popularity of his lectures. Pennington wrote several books on British and European law, including Company Law (1959), with revised editions appearing as Pennington's Company Law; Corporate Insolvency Law (1990); The Law of Investment Markets (1990); Small Private Companies (1998); and The Re-organisation of Public and Private Companies' Share Capital (1999).
