SIDELIGHTS:

Doug Myers is a writer. He was born on April 14, 1964, and lives in Delaware with his wife and children. He is a graduate of the College of William & Mary. After completing his undergraduate studies, he attended the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and earned a master of business administration degree.

A longtime fan of baseball, Myers wrote several books on the topic of America's favorite pastime. His first book, Essential Cubs: Chicago Cubs Facts, Feats, and Firsts—from the Batter's Box to the Bullpen to the Bleachers, was published in 1999. He followed this work in 2000 with The Louisville Slugger Complete Book of Pitching, written with Mark Gola. That same year he also published Louisville Slugger Presents Batting Around: A Comprehensive Collection of Hitting Achievements, Anecdotes, and Analyses.

In 2007 Myers and Philadelphia Phillies executive Bill Giles published Pouring Six Beers at a Time: And Other Stories from a Lifetime in Baseball. Myers tells a number of Giles's stories from his life growing up as the son of the president of the National League and an executive of the Phillies. Reviews for the memoir were mostly positive. Dave Studeman, writing in Hardball Times, described Pouring Six Beers at a Time as a "very entertaining new book." Studeman added that "it's full of good stories about baseball and people." Studeman particularly noted a story Giles retold about Houston Astros general manager Paul Richards, claiming that Richards offered a full-team swap to the Detroit team manager in 1967. Studeman later located information showing that Richards was not general manager of the Astros that year, pondering: "I don't understand why publishers don't fact-check memoirs such as Giles'." Booklist contributor David Pitt, however, said the writing is full of "enthusiasm" and "is downright contagious," concluding that the book "delivers a wild ride through baseball history."
