OBITUARY NOTICE—

See index for CA sketch: Born May 13, 1920, in Clevedon, Somerset, England; died February 14, 2007. Musician and author. Morris was a flautist who performed for many years for the Philharmonia Orchestra. A talented student who was already gaining professional work before he entered college, he performed with the Royal Air Force Symphony Orchestra during World War II. Afterwards, he attended the Royal Academy of Music, earning degrees in 1945 and 1950. Morris taught at the Royal Academy and played as a freelance musician after college. He was recruited by the Philharmonia in 1949, and played with them until 1972; he also served as the orchestra's principal flautist from 1966 to 1972. Tragically, his performing career came to an end when a mugger in New York City struck the musician in the mouth. With his professional career as a flautist over, Morris taught at the Royal Academy until 1985, was a judge for international competitions, and wrote Flute Technique (1991).
