SIDELIGHTS: Publishing under the name Bob McCullough, Robert McCullough has written numerous books and articles on such subjects as architecture, jazz music, and especially sports. Several of McCullough's books are compilations of interviews with athletes and other participants in particular sports, such as baseball, football, and car racing. My Greatest Day in Baseball, 1946-1997, for example, includes ninety interviews with players, managers, umpires, and announcers. In the work McCullough makes an effort to include "greatest days" that are less well known to fans, while still involving such legends as Hank Aaron, Tommy Lasorda, both Ken Griffey Junior and Senior, and Tug McGraw. A contributor to Publishers Weekly called the volume "a portrait that is filled not with self-aggrandizing achievements, but with warm personal anecdotes," while Jim G. Burns, writing in Library Journal, referred to McCullough's interviews as "a breath of fresh air."

McCullough continues his approach to sports writing in My Greatest Day in Golf: The Legends of Golf Recount Their Greatest Moments. Booklist reviewer Bill Ott noted that the book has "a simple premise but an appealing one," and although many of the interviews contain standard material, there are also plenty of lesser-known tidbits for the sports-trivia buff. A reviewer for Publishers Weekly commented that "the most satisfying parts of the book are the champions' thoughts on the state of the game." Another volume, My Greatest Day in Football: The Legends of Football Recount Their Greatest Moments, includes interviews with members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Library Journal contributor William Scheeren remarked that "the personalities of the players take center stage," and Booklist reviewer Wes Lukowsky stated that "the carefully edited text creates the feeling of sitting around a table with guys . . . sharing the memories."
