McDaniel, Barry

McDaniel, Barry , American baritone; b. Lyndon, Kans., Oct. 18, 1930. He was a student at the Juilliard School of Music in N.Y. and of Alfred Paulus and Hermann Reutter at the Stuttgart Hochschule für Musik. In 1953 he made his recital debut in Stuttgart. After appearing in opera in Mainz (1954–55), Stuttgart (1957–59), and Karlsruhe (1960–62), he was a principal member of the Deutsche Opera in Berlin (from 1962). On Jan. 19, 1972, he made his Metropolitan Opera debut in N.Y. as Pelléas, remaining on the roster for that season. His guest engagements took him to most of the leading opera houses and festivals. He also appeared widely as a concert artist and recitalist. His expansive repertoire ranged from early music to contemporary scores.
