Lewis, Donald Earle 1925–2005

OBITUARY NOTICE—See index for CA sketch: Born May 25, 1925, in Baltimore, MD; died of cardiac arrest, November 22, 2005, in Pearcy, AR. Minister and author. A World War II and Korean War veteran, Lewis was a retired Methodist minister and longtime chair of the church's board of child care. He served in the Army's Rainbow Division in the European theater and was present at the liberation of the Dachau concentration camp. Returning home, he completed his undergraduate education at what is now McDaniel College in 1947. This was followed by an S.T.B. from Wesley Theological Seminary in 1950. Lewis then worked as a minister before volunteering to be a chaplain on the Korean front lines. Here he earned a Bronze Star and a Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Clusters for valor under fire and saving a wounded soldier's life. He retired from the army a full colonel, and went home to continue his ministerial work. Lewis was a minister in Annapolis, Maryland, from 1954 to 1960, and then in Washington, DC, and Hyattsville, Maryland. He retired in 1970. Highly active in the Baltimore-Washington Conference of the United Methodist Church from 1945 until 1970, he led the child care board during that time. He was also the author of Prayer Power: Living the Lord's Prayer (1960).
