SIDELIGHTS:

In her debut novel, Catching Genius Kristy Kiernan tells the story of two sisters, Estella and Connie, who experience the downside of the presence of genius. Once the best of friends as well as siblings, the two were driven apart as children when family attention focused on seven-year-old math prodigy Estella, and Connie was largely left to make her own way, bereft of her father's affections. While Estella attracted attention through her intellectual gifts, Connie cultivated her beauty as her means of coping with the world.

"Kiernan's successful melding of math and lyrical prose lends the novel invisible depths that provide an intellectual as well as emotional charge to the novel," commented Terez Rose on Mostly Fiction. BookPage reviewer Sheri Melnick declared the book "simply mesmerizing," and Booklist reviewer Kristine Huntley called it a "warm, moving novel about the power of familial bonds."
