SIDELIGHTS: Nora Hague's first novel, Letters from an Age of Reason, is set in the 1860s. It is the story of two young people living very different lives. Sixteen-year-old Arabella Leeds comes from a wealthy New York family. Aubrey Paxton, a young colored man, is a house servant in New Orleans. When the U.S. Civil War begins Aubrey escapes to New York with plans to board a ship heading for Europe. Once in New York he meets Arabella, and they soon fall in love, which may cause trouble for them both. Library Journal contributor Cynthia Johnson stated, "Well-developed secondary characters and subplots make this debut novel difficult to put down."
