SIDELIGHTS:

Anthony A. Goodman served for nearly three decades as a general surgeon, both in the U.S. Army Medical Corps and as a civilian, and continues to share his expertise as an adjunct professor of medicine at Montana State University. With Lucy Shapero, Goodman wrote Never Say Die: A Doctor and Patient Talk about Breast Cancer, providing patients with a handbook of topics to cover and an outline of the procedures and experiences they can expect to encounter while treating their illness. With The Shadow of God: A Novel of War and Faith, Goodman indulges a passion other than medicine. The novel is based on the true story of the Turkish siege of the island of Rhodes in 1522. Over a period of 145 days, Grand Master Philippe de L'Isle Adam led a group of European knights in defending the island against the attack by the Ottoman army before finally surrendering. Goodman's novel combines historical fact with romantic fiction. In Kirkus Reviews, one contributor called the book "a good telling of a true story, readable, diverting, but not a standout." However, a reviewer for Publishers Weekly commented that "perhaps the most satisfying element of this novel is Goodman's artful rendering of the landscapes and pageantry of the Ottoman Empire." Margaret Flanagan, writing for Booklist, noted that the work "does a superb job of breathing new life into a gallery of fascinating historical figures."
