Wai C. Chu told CA: "When I started as a doctoral student I couldn't find any decent textbook in my primary area of interest: speech coding. I wished that I could find a book that was well-organized and comprehensive enough for me. Unfortunately I couldn't find one; hence, my goal was to write a comprehensive textbook in speech coding so that the newcomer to the field could efficiently grasp the details necessary to understand the different techniques involved."
