BELL, Eileen 1907-2005

OBITUARY NOTICE— See index for CA sketch: Born October 28, 1907, in Bristol, England; died January 27, 2005, in Leiston, Suffolk, England. Artist and author. Bell was a well-known English artist who not only painted, but also created works in pottery and textiles. Because her parents did not approve of their daughter becoming a visual artist, she initially studied piano, receiving a degree from the Howard Jones School of Music in 1925. After marrying in 1937, however, she was able to attend the St. John's Wood School of Art. In the late 1940s she also studied at the Anglo-French Art Centre. Her artistic endeavors led to jobs in teaching both art and music, as well as an interest in interior design. During the late 1950s and early 1960s, this latter pursuit resulted in her becoming a visiting designer at the Council of Industrial Design. Interestingly, Bell also decided to produce two children's books in the early 1970s: Tales from the End Cottage (1970) and More Tales from the End Cottage (1972), which were based on her son's childhood experiences. Her paintings have appeared in a variety of exhibitions, including at the Royal Society of British Artists, the Duncalfe Gallery, and the Chappell Gallery, where a retrospective exhibition was held in 2003.
