Zillig, Winfried (Petrus Ignatius), German

Zillig, Winfried (Petrus Ignatius), German conductor and composer; b. Würzburg, April 1,1905; d. Hamburg, Dec. 17, 1963. He studied at the Würzburg Cons, and with Schoenberg in Vienna (1925-26) and in his master classes at the Prussian Academy of Arts in Berlin (1926-28). After working as répétiteur in Oldenburg (1928-32), he conducted in Düsseldorf (1932-37); was music director of the Essen Opera (1937-40), the Poznan Opera (1940-43), and the Düsseldorf Opera (1946-47); then was chief conductor of the Hesse Radio in Frankfurt am Main (1947-51). He was director of the music division of the North German Radio in Hamburg from 1959 to 1963.
