Zilcher, (Karl) Hermann (Josef), German

Zilcher, (Karl) Hermann (Josef), German composer, pianist, and pedagogue; b. Frankfurt am Main, Aug. 18, 1881; d. Würzburg, Jan. 1, 1948. He studied piano with his father, Paul Zilcher, and then continued his training at the Hoch Cons, in Frankfurt am Main (1897-1901) with Kwast (piano) and Knorr and Scholz (composition). After serving on its faculty (1905-08), he was a prof, at the Akademie der Tonkunst in Munich (1908-20). From 1920 to 1944 he was director of the Würzburg Cons. He also made tours as a pianist. His music represents an amalgam of late Romantic and Impressionist elements.

dramatic: Fitzebutze, Traumspiel (1903); Doktor Eisenbart (1922); incidental music. ORCH.: 4 syms.; 2 violin concertos; Bayerische Suite for Accordion Orch.; Accordion Concerto. OTHER: Many piano pieces, including a Sym. for 2 Pianos; numerous songs.
