Zallinger, Meinhard Von

Zallinger, Meinhard VOn, Austrian conductor; b. Vienna, Feb. 25, 1897; d. Salzburg, Sept. 24, 1990. He studied piano and conducting at the Salzburg Mozarteum, and also took music courses at the Univ. of Innsbruck. He conducted at the Mozarteum (1920-22), then was on the staff of the Bavarian State Opera in Munich (1926-29) and the Cologne Opera (1929-35). He returned to the Bavarian State Opera in 1935, conducting there until 1944; was then made Generalmusikdirektor in Duisburg. In 1947 he became director of the Mozarteum Orch., and also held the same office at the Salzburg Landestheater. He was music director in Graz (1949-50), of the Vienna Volksoper (1950-53), and the Komische Oper in East Berlin (1953-56). He served again as a conductor at the Bavarian State Opera (1956-73); was concurrently director of the summer academy at the Mozarteum (1956-68).
