Yansons, Arvid

Yansons, Arvid , Latvian conductor, father of Mariss Jansons; b. Leipaja, Oct. 24,1914; d. Manchester, England, Nov. 21,1984. He studied violin at the Leipaja Cons. (1929-35), then took courses in violin, conducting, and composition at the Riga Cons. (1940-44). In 1944 he made his conducting debut in Riga; in 1948 he was made assoc. conductor of the Leningrad Phil.; also appeared as a guest conductor throughout the Soviet Union, Europe, Australia, and Japan. From 1965 he made regular guest conducting appearances with the Halle Orch. in Manchester; also served as head of the conducting class at the Leningrad Cons, (from 1972).
