Wordsworth, Barry
Wordsworth, Barry, English conductor; b. Worcester Park, Surrey, Feb. 20,1948. He studied conducting with Boult, winning the Tagore Gold Medal at the Royal Coll. of Music in London in 1970. That same year he was co-winner of the Sargent Conductors’ Prize. He received training in harpsichord from Leonhardt in Amsterdam. He appeared as a conductor with the Royal Ballet of London (1974-84), and with the Australian Ballet and the Ballet of Canada. From 1982 to 1984 he was music director of the New Sadler’s Wells Opera in London. In 1989 he became principal conductor of the Brighton Phil. and the BBC Concert Orch. in London. He also was music director of the Royal Ballet in London and of the Birmingham Royal Ballet from 1990. In 1991 he made his debut at London’s Covent Garden conducting Carmen. In 1993 he was conductor of the Last Night of the Proms gala with the BBC Sym. Orch. in London.
