Vasconcelos, Jorge Croner de

Vasconcelos, Jorge Croner de, Portuguese composer and teacher; b. Lisbon, April 11,1910; d. there, Dec. 9, 1974. He studied in Lisbon with Aroldo Silva (piano; 1927-31) and at the Cons, with Freitas Branco (composition; 1927-34), then completed his training with Dukas, Boulanger, and Roger-Ducasse in Paris (1934-37). From 1939 he taught composition at the Lisbon Cons.

Melodias sobre antigos textos portuguesesfor Voice, Flute, and String Quartet (1937); Piano Quartet (1938); 2 ballets: A Faina do mar (1940) and Coimbra (1959); Partitafor Piano (1961); A vela vermelhafor Orch. (1962); Vilancico para a Festa de Santa Ceciliafor Chorus and Orch. (1967).
