Toye, Francis (John) (b Winchester, 1883; d Florence, 1964). Eng. music critic and author. Wrote for various Eng. papers and journals, incl. Morning Post 1925–37. Author of books on Verdi (1931) and Rossini (1934). Lived in Rio de Janeiro 1939–46 and from 1946 in Florence. Comp. songs. Dir., Brit. Inst., Florence 1936–9. CBE 1954.
