Tinsley, Pauline (Cecilia)

Tinsley, Pauline (Cecilia), English soprano; b. Wigan, March 27, 1928. She studied at the Northern School of Music in Manchester, then with Joan Cross at the National School of Opera in London. She made her operatic debut in London in 1951 as Desdemona in Rossini’s Otello; sang with the Welsh National Opera in Cardiff (from 1962) and the Handel Opera Soc. She joined the Sadler’s Wells Opera in London in 1963; sang at London’s Covent Garden from 1965. In 1969 she made her U.S. debut as Anna Bolena at the Santa Fe Opera, and later sang with other U.S. opera companies. Among her prominent roles were Mozart’s Countess and Fiordiligi, Aida, Lady Macbeth, Elektra, and Turandot.
